Local SEO and Google Business Profile: How to Get Found by Nearby Customers
Last updated: By Callum Skinner
When someone in Lincoln searches for “accountant near me” or “plumber Sleaford”, they are making a high-intent, location-specific query. Local SEO is the discipline of making sure your business appears in front of those searchers rather than your competitors.
For small businesses that serve a defined geographic area, local SEO is often the highest-return SEO investment available.
The Local Search Landscape
Local search results typically include two distinct formats:
- The Map Pack (or Local Pack): three business listings with a map, appearing near the top of results for local queries. This is driven primarily by your Google Business Profile.
- Local organic results: standard blue-link results, typically below the Map Pack, where your website pages compete.
Winning in both requires a joined-up approach. Your Google Business Profile and your website reinforce each other. You cannot rely on one and ignore the other.
Google Business Profile: Where Local SEO Starts
Your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the listing that powers your appearance in the Map Pack, Google Maps, and the knowledge panel that appears when someone searches your brand name directly.
Getting the basics right makes a significant difference:
Claim and Verify
If you have not claimed your listing, do so at business.google.com. Google will send a verification code by post, phone, or video to confirm you are the genuine business owner. An unclaimed listing can be edited by anyone and will not perform as well as a verified one.
Complete Every Field
Google uses profile completeness as a quality signal. Fill in:
- Business name (exactly as it appears in the real world, no keyword stuffing)
- Address and service areas
- Primary category and any relevant secondary categories
- Phone number and website URL
- Opening hours (and holiday hours when applicable)
- Business description (informative, not keyword-loaded)
- Products and services with descriptions
Add Photos Consistently
Profiles with photos receive more views and direction requests than those without. Add exterior shots, interior shots, team photos, and service images. Keep adding new ones, as recent activity signals an active business.
Earn and Respond to Reviews
Reviews are one of the strongest local ranking signals. The quantity, recency, and rating of your reviews all contribute to where you appear in the Map Pack.
More importantly, responding to reviews (both positive and negative) signals that you are an engaged, trustworthy business. A prompt, professional response to a negative review often does more for your reputation than the review itself.
The most effective way to generate reviews is to ask. Most satisfied customers who are asked directly will leave one. A simple follow-up message after a job is complete, with a direct link to your review page, converts well.
NAP Consistency: the Citation Foundation
NAP stands for Name, Address, and Phone number. The principle is simple: these three pieces of information should appear identically everywhere your business is listed online.
Inconsistent NAP data (different phone numbers on different directories, an old address still showing on some sites, your business name written differently across listings) creates confusion for both Google and potential customers.
The key directories to ensure are correct include:
- Yell.com
- Bing Places for Business
- Apple Maps
- Yelp
- Thomson Local
- Any industry-specific directories relevant to your sector
You do not need hundreds of citations. You need the significant ones to be accurate and consistent.
Local Content on Your Website
Your website plays a supporting role in local SEO that is often underestimated.
Pages that describe your services with local context (mentioning specific towns, service areas, and local landmarks where genuinely relevant) help Google understand that your business is relevant for those location-based searches. This does not mean creating low-quality “doorway pages” for every town in the county. It means writing genuine, useful service pages that naturally reflect where you operate.
A dedicated page for each of your core service areas, with content that actually describes your offer in that area, performs better than a single generic page trying to target everywhere at once.

Common Questions About local seo
What Is the Google Map Pack and Why Does It Matter?
The Map Pack (also called the Local Pack or 3-Pack) is the block of three business listings with a map that appears above organic search results for local queries. It typically captures a significant share of clicks for commercial local searches. Appearing in it depends primarily on your Google Business Profile, proximity to the searcher, and your overall local relevance signals.
How Do I Optimise My Google Business Profile?
Claim and verify the profile, fill in every field completely, choose the most accurate primary and secondary categories, add photos regularly, keep your hours up to date (including seasonal changes), respond to all reviews, post updates at least monthly, and add your services with descriptions. Completeness and activity are both signals Google uses to assess how useful your profile is to searchers.
What Are Local Citations and Do They Still Matter?
Local citations are mentions of your business name, address, and phone number (NAP) on other websites (directories, review sites, data aggregators). They still matter as a trust and consistency signal, but their value has decreased relative to reviews and on-site content. Focus on accuracy and consistency rather than trying to accumulate hundreds of listings.
How Long Does Local SEO Take to Show Results?
Initial improvements to a Google Business Profile can produce results within a few weeks. Broader local SEO work (building content, earning reviews, and improving citations) typically takes three to six months to show meaningful movement in local rankings. The timeline depends heavily on competition in your area and the current state of your online presence.
Does My Website Content Affect Local Rankings?
Yes. Local SEO is not only about your Google Business Profile. Your website's content, particularly pages that mention your service areas, use relevant local terms, and clearly describe your services, contributes to local ranking signals. The website and the Business Profile work together.
