How to Appear in AI Search Results: A Practical Guide
Last updated: By Callum Skinner
When someone asks ChatGPT for the best plumber in their area, or uses Google’s AI Overviews to find an answer to a question your business could answer, the content those tools draw from comes from across the web. Some of it comes from businesses like yours. Most of it, currently, does not.
Appearing in AI search is not guaranteed, and it is not fully within your control. But there are concrete things you can do to make it significantly more likely. This guide covers the practical steps.
Understand How AI Search Sources Content
Different AI search tools work differently in the detail, but share a common principle: they draw from content they have indexed or can access, and they prefer sources they have reason to trust.
Google AI Overviews sits within Google Search and draws primarily from pages that Google already indexes and rates highly. Strong traditional SEO is the foundation.
Perplexity AI crawls the web directly (using its own bot, PerplexityBot) and tends to favour recent, well-structured content. It cites sources in-line, making it one of the more transparent AI search tools in terms of attribution.
ChatGPT in search mode uses a Bing index as its primary source when Browse is enabled. Pages indexed by Bing and ranking in Bing’s results are the pool it draws from.
The practical implication is clear: good SEO foundations serve all three, and investing in content authority serves all three simultaneously.
Build a Content Foundation AI Tools Can Use
Answer Questions Directly
AI search is fundamentally question-answering. Content that phrases itself around the questions your customers are actually asking, and answers those questions directly, early in the content, performs better in AI summaries than content that buries the answer after paragraphs of preamble.
This is one area where FAQ content is particularly powerful. A well-structured FAQ section gives AI tools pre-packaged answer units that are easy to surface.
Cover Topics with Genuine Depth
AI tools synthesise answers from content that actually contains the answer. A product page with three sentences of description does not compete with a detailed service page that explains what you do, who it is for, how it works, and what outcomes clients achieve. Depth is not the same as length. It is substantive coverage of all the relevant angles.
Write for Clarity, Not for Algorithms
AI-generated summaries pull phrases and sentences from source content and synthesise them. Content that is clearly written, structured in logical sections, and free of marketing filler is much easier for an AI to extract useful information from. Sentence-level clarity matters.
Signals of Authority and Trust
AI search tools, like traditional search engines, prefer sources that demonstrate credibility. The signals they use include:
- Backlinks from reputable sites, third parties vouching for the credibility of your content
- Brand mentions, your business being referenced across the web, even without a link, contributes to entity recognition
- Authorship signals, content attributed to named, credible authors with relevant expertise
- Schema markup, structured data that identifies who you are, what you do, and why you should be trusted (more on this in our AI search hub)
These are the same signals that support traditional SEO. Building them for one purpose serves the other.
Technical Steps to Help AI Crawlers
Ensure Your Site Is Crawlable
Check that your robots.txt does not block AI-specific crawlers. Common AI crawler user agents include PerplexityBot, GPTBot (OpenAI), and anthropic-ai (Anthropic’s Claude). If you want to be cited by these tools, you must not block them.
If you have specific pages you do not want AI tools to train on or summarise, you can block individual bots selectively. But a blanket disallow blocks all potential citations.
Add an llms.txt File
An llms.txt file is an emerging convention for helping AI crawlers navigate your site, pointing them towards your most important and trustworthy content. It is quick to implement and signals that you understand AI indexing. Read the full guide on what llms.txt is and why it matters.
Implement Appropriate Schema Markup
Structured data in JSON-LD format helps AI systems understand the entities on your site: your business, your services, your people, your location. Organisation, LocalBusiness, Article, and FAQPage schema are particularly valuable. Well-implemented schema reduces the interpretive work an AI system has to do.
Monitoring Your AI Search Visibility
Unlike traditional SEO, where rank tracking tools give you daily position data, AI search visibility is harder to measure precisely. Current practical approaches:
- Manual spot checks, regularly search for queries relevant to your business in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews and note whether you appear
- Brand mention monitoring, tools like Brand24 or Mention track references to your business name across the web, including from AI-generated content
- Referral traffic analysis, monitor your analytics for traffic from AI platform domains (perplexity.ai, chat.openai.com, etc.)
This will become easier as dedicated AI visibility tracking tools mature. For now, systematic manual checks are the most reliable method.

Common Questions About ai search
Why Does My Business Not Appear in AI Search Answers?
The most common reasons are insufficient content authority (not enough quality backlinks or brand mentions), content that does not directly answer the questions being asked, missing or incorrect structured data, and a website that is not well-indexed. AI tools tend to draw from sources they have reason to trust. Building that trust through consistent, high-quality content and earned links is the most reliable path to citation.
Does Social Media Presence Affect AI Search Visibility?
Indirectly. A strong social media presence can generate brand mentions and links from third-party sites that then contribute to your authority signals. Some AI tools also index social content directly. However, the primary signals remain your website content, backlinks, and structured data. Social media amplifies those rather than replacing them.
Do I Need a Separate Strategy for Each AI Search Tool?
The underlying content and authority requirements are broadly similar across Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity, well-structured, authoritative, clearly written content earns citations across platforms. Some platform-specific factors exist (Perplexity, for example, prioritises recent content highly), but a single strong content strategy covers the majority of the ground.
What Is the Relationship Between Traditional SEO Ranking and AI Search Citations?
There is significant overlap. Pages that rank well in traditional search are more likely to be cited in AI summaries, because both reward similar signals: authority, relevance, and content quality. However, the overlap is not complete. Some pages cited in AI Overviews do not rank in the top ten traditionally, and vice versa. Targeting both deliberately produces the strongest combined outcome.
